What is Defendo?
The Defendo system was devised by 5 foot
tall 'Mighty Atom' Bill Underwood during
World War I and II. He used it in the
trenches at Ypres, and then taught it
to Allied Special Forces and spies at
Camp-X, Canada. The system works by joint
manipulation, restraints, strikes, grips,
leverages and by manipulating the aggressor's
nervous system. Direct and extremely practical,
Defendo techniques have proven themselves
through "life and death" combat
situations in World Wars I and II and
North American Intelligence and Law Enforcement
communities.
Defendo is now being taught
as a living exhibit at the Royal Armouries
Museum in Leeds.
There are only a handful
of Defendo instructors in the UK. Dik
is a fully qualified level 2 instructor.

Who
can learn Defendo? Anybody.
Defendo is not a martial art. It's not about
physical fitness, competitions or sparring.
It's about immediately shutting down any
physical conflict. The system is not based
on physical strength or athletic ability
(although that always helps) so anyone can
learn it.
Defendo offers many highly effective dirty
tricks and twists for both beginners and
seasoned martial artists. It has great applications
where high impact techniques may not be
applicable.
Defendo is taught in short, easily attended
seminars, or in private tuition |

|
| How
can it help the martial artists?
Defendo techniques are quite different from
those found in many classes. The locks,
grips and leverages are very practical and
can be easily integrated into your knowledge
and skill base. It becomes immediately useful
in enhancing a student's martial arts skill.
Defendo is used inside kicking and punching
range. |

| How
can it help the non-martial artist?
Defendo techniques are very easy to learn
(they had to be taught to servicemen and
women in a very short timescale). If you
have an interest in personal safety, this
is an excellent first step. Defendo is taught
to nurses, estate agents, home visitors,
law enforcements professionals and members
of the public of all ages. It is a very
useful set of low-force options that are
applicable to all. |

| About
Bill Underwood: Bill had no formal
training in eastern martial arts. Hence
this is a truly British system. He was born
in Liverpool in 1895 and died in 1986. In
the 1980s, Bill went on the US Johnny Carson
show with Lou Ferrigno (the original Incredible
Hulk star) and choked him unconscious. He
was in his 80's at the time. This was a
common theme for Bill. He was reputed to
have walked into the headquarters of the
Los Angeles police, made his way into the
Chief of Police's office and promptly put
him into a compliance hold on the floor.
Once the Chief had recovered, Bill offered
to teach Defendo to his officers. |
